MotoGP, Alex Rins: “On Monday I’ll know if I’ll have to have shoulder surgery”

It wasn’t the best day for Alex Rins in Portimao. Not so much because of his 17th place at the end of the FP2s, but because of his fall. From the images, it seemed to be a fall like many others, but it set off an alarm bell for the Suzuki rider. In fact, he hit his right shoulder during the fall. The shoulder he injured in Jerez that caused him so many problems, and he definitely felt the pain.

Since the injury, I hadn’t fallen on my right side anymore. Just a couple of times on my left,” he explained. “It happened today, and I felt pain in my shoulder. Nothing too serious, but it bothered me in the right turns.

How much did it bother you?

It’s hard to say. Until yesterday, I felt 100%, but after today’s accident, I think I’m 60 or 70. Falling, all the weight went on my shoulder. Honestly, I’m surprised, because I thought I was completely healed.

Is there a risk that you’ll be forced to have  surgery?

On Monday, after the race, I’ll get in my car and drive to Doctor Mir in Barcelona. With him, we’ll assess the situation, understand the risks and whether surgery will be necessary. In that case, I’ll do it as soon as possible.”

Besides the fall, how did the day go?

In the first free practice session, I had a good pace, but the second was a disaster. I certainly missed something, but I’m sure I can improve tomorrow morning.

What do you think about Portimao?

It’s a fantastic track. It doesn’t give you a moment to breathe, and you have to be fully focused to avoid mistakes in riding. You need a good set-up, but also know how to manage the gas. Also, you have to work a lot on the electronics so that it doesn’t cut too much power when the bike rears.
