Lewis Hamilton’s seventh Formula 1 world title is one of several dramatic championship conclusions in this week’s Autosport magazine, out today (19 November).

It had seemed likely that Hamilton would equal Michael Schumacher’s feat in 2020, but the Turkish Grand Prix weekend was a tough one for Mercedes. As Alex Kalinauckas shows in our report, the W11 wasn’t at its best on the slippery Istanbul circuit and a number of drivers could have won.

But Hamilton underlined his status as one of the sport’s greats by dealing with the conditions best to take one of his finest victories and match the championship wins record set by Schumacher in 2004.

Another British world champion was crowned in Bahrain as Mike Conway clinched the World Endurance crown, alongside Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez. Only the two Toyotas started the final race of the once-great LMP1 era, but Conway’s crew took a well-deserved title following the misfortune at Le Mans. Aston Martin also wrapped up two GTE championships.

The British Touring Car decider at Brands Hatch was exciting, as ever. Reigning champion and points leader coming into the finale Colin Turkington was finally knocked off his perch by a brilliant performance from Ash Sutton, while front-wheel-drive masters Dan Cammish and Tom Ingram were also in the mix. Some of the most dramatic action came in the support categories at Brands Hatch, with the British Formula 4 Championship fight between Luke Browning and Zak O’Sullivan being decided in almost unbelievable style. After an open and unpredictable MotoGP season, Joan Mir secured the title with one round still to go with a seventh-place finish at Valencia. That ended Suzuki’s 20-year wait for the crown, while other Japanese marques had reason to celebrate after the Sebring 12 Hours. Acura took the IMSA crown, while Mazda won the endurance classic.
